Fed: Govt extends special tax plans for indigenous artists
The federal government says remote Aboriginal artists will not have to pay tax for
at least another year on art sales if they amount to less than $10,000.
Aborigines who had yet to acquire an Australian Business Number were granted extra
time to adapt to the changes from the new tax system last year.
Today the government extended the arrangement for another year, until June 2002.
Arts and Centenary of Federation Minister PETER MCGAURAN today announced the extension
after meetings with indigenous artists, the Australian Taxation Office and other government
representatives.
Mr MCGAURAN says in a statement there are special arrangements covering indigenous
artists in remote areas in the transitional phase of the new tax system.
He says these special arrangements will continue for another year, to allow education
and support programs that meet the needs of remote indigenous communities to be established.
