WA: Police decline to lay charges over Aboriginal tribal riot

Police say they've decided not to lay charges over a riot sparked by the death of asix-year-old boy at a remote West Australian Aboriginal community.

The boy died at the Balgo Hills community, in the state's far north, in July 2001 afterbeing crushed under the wheels of a fuel tanker.

A group of mourners armed with iron bars and tree branches later tried to hunt downthe truck driver to take revenge.

They attacked non-indigenous workers in the community who tried to intervene when thefight broke out.

Complainant PETER MCLEAN was allegedly beaten during the riot, which at the time forcedthe closure of the camp to all non-indigenous people in the area.

Police say that despite extensive inquires and several complaints, a lack of evidencemeans they can't bring charges.

  1. Yes there was no evidence apart from the local Priest who witnessed it but would not say anything. Also there was my injuries treated in the Alice Springs Hospital. Also 2 young Police Officers who rescued 8 people who were under seige by a crazed mob in the Nurses Quarters, were unable to be rescued because the incident never happened. The POLICE MINISTER also wrote us a letter saying there was no evidence, but then outlined certain "defences" for the incident "which never happened".
