NSW: Terror bill passes NSW parliament
Laws giving police sweeping new powers during terrorist emergencies have been passedby the New South Wales parliament amid claims they are unconstitutional.
Despite challenges from the opposition and crossbenchers, the upper house yesterdayvoted 27 to 7 to pass the bill in its entirety.
The new laws give police more power to search people, vehicles and premises for sevendays to prevent a terrorist attack, or up to 48 hours after one has occurred.
Mr CARR says the legislation is strong and balanced, but the Greens believe the newlaws could be struck out by the Supreme Court.
Greens MLC LEE RHIANNON says clause 13 of the bill -- stating an authorisation andany related decision by the police minister can't be challenged -- is unconstitutional.
Mr CARR says the government believes the legislation is legal.
